The API economy was supposed to be simple: every service publishes an API, every developer connects to APIs, data flows freely. The reality turned out to be messier. Most valuable data sources don’t have usable public APIs. And even when they do, rate limits, pricing, and access requirements create real friction.
A different model is taking shape in 2026: workers as a service. Instead of connecting to APIs you don’t control, you submit jobs to workers that handle the extraction and return structured data. What went wrong with APIs
The promise of the API economy was that data would be commoditized — every service would expose clean, well-documented endpoints, and developers could compose them like Lego blocks.

What microservices don’t solve

For data teams: The “build vs. buy” question for individual data sources increasingly favors buy (via workers) for standard sources, with in-house capability reserved for truly proprietary data needs.
For developers considering publishing: If you have deep expertise in extracting data from a specific platform, publishing a worker monetizes that expertise without requiring you to build a product, manage customers, or handle billing.
The API economy is becoming a worker economy
The cleanest framing: the API economy assumed that platforms would cooperate by building usable APIs. They mostly haven’t, or have done so at prices most teams can’t afford. The worker economy doesn’t depend on platform cooperation — it operates on publicly visible data, providing structured access where no formal API exists.
It’s not a replacement for the API economy. It’s the complement that fills the gaps the API economy left behind.
